Once one of the largest builders of steam engines, the American Locomotive Company introduced its diesel RS "road switchers" in 1941, pioneering a look that would revolutionize diesel power. Unlike streamlined engines with a cab in front and a full-width body - like the Santa Fe F-3 diesels elsewhere in this catalog - the ALCo RS-series had narrow hoods and outside walkways with doors that opened into the engine compartment. Mechanics loved the engine because it was easier to service, and train crews liked the better visibility to the rear for switching moves. Electro-Motive Division, the largest diesel builder at the time, copied the road switcher, or "hood unit," configuration with its GP7 and GP9. The look of the diesel had changed forever, and most of today's engines are descendants of those early ALCo RS road switchers.
Recreate the diesel revolution on the mighty Pennsylvania railroad with this authentic 1950s freight set - complete with a unique Pennsy-style caboose and twin-motored RS-3 diesel featuring horn, bell, accurate ALCo diesel sounds, and freight yard sound effects for your hard-working railroad.
